Kickball in the City

And then there were 2

So Kickball Homer proves clairvoyant as the decision by one of my leagues. WAKA. falls flat on it's face. They had 6 regions setup across the country for those "hard core" kickers I guess they thought they could get money from. Now, they had to shut down all but two due to a lack of interest.

I got all of the Kickball Today updates telling my team to "Hurry and register" before time and space ran out. That this would be the "biggest kickball tournament ever" as if we cared about that. As the deadline approached I chortled, knowing they would never fill and knowing too that they would extend it and lower the registration "deposit". The deadline came and went and sho 'nuff I got the email: We've extended it just for you but hurry! And it's half the price! Um, aren't things that are popular usually MORE money after the deadline passes?

So my team again says, "Please it's kickball we joined to drink" and passes. Now we find out that 2/3 of the regionals are shut down. What a shock! Poor WAKA will make only $3,000,000 instead of 4 or so. I ranted against this already so I won't waste time rehashing all of that, but suffice to say that KH knows it's stuff. So, my WAKA season is cut short my damn near a month for a tournament that 2/3 of the people couldn't care less about. GREEAAATTT! Thankfully my other two leagues are here and I can just keep playin'.

PS Congrats to Sideshow Bob for getting in the Washington Post!

  • WAKA makes nothing from these tournaments, because there is no fee to play. The $250 deposit is returned to you when your team shows up to play. In fact, they make more money when they have to close a regional because then they don't have to staff it, pay for field space, etc.

  • jdjpfLOL, ok. What about the teams that don't show? What about sponsorships? What about the money that they get from the travel agency for sending people through them? Whatever you say JM. It certainly follows that WAKA would do something that DOESN'T make them money.

  • I'm sure there are things WAKA can do, will do, and has done to profit from tournaments. They are a business after all. And, if nothing else, they indirectly benefit by improving the experience for players. However, you implied that *cancelling* the Regionals makes WAKA even more money. I'm sure all sponsorships and kickbacks are void if the event doesn't happen.

If teams don't show, WAKA actually states in the deposit agreement that no-show money goes toward buying more beer at the region's afterparty.

  • WAKA's regional tournaments have always been and still are free for WAKA players. My team's coming up for the Annapolis one and I'm psyched to get to play in a really large tournament for no extra cost. What's the anger about? If you don't want to go to a huge free regional, then don't.

  • Ok, you win I don't want to debate with someone that changes the argument. First you write they make no money, then you write they do and that's their right as a biz. W/e if you can't see the point that's fine, some of us know better.

  • I misread your first, sorry. Thought you were saying they make more money by cancelling tourneys. You said less. Right. But you were also saying they were making money from deposits; they don't according to their website. And what's wrong with them bringing together sponsors, vendors, and players if it's free to the players? No one is making you play.
